The Shell Beneath Your Shoe
I'm strolling on the sand,
Where shells of every hue
Lie cracked and broken,
A sad and lifeless view.
They once were full of life,
But now they're just dead things,
Their beauty still extant,
But no longer with wings.
The sun is shining bright,
I close my eyes to see
The smell of seaweed salad,
Breezing in the sea.
But when I try to open,
My eyes are nowhere to find,
No lids or pupils left,
Blinded by the light.
For I am but a grain of sand,
And have no life left, too,
I'm just another breathless
Shell beneath someone's shoe.
